Michelle Obama, First Lady of the United States, has revealed that her unmarried 17-year-old daughter is five months pregnant.
A statement released by Elizabeth Alexander, the First Lady’s Communication Director, said Malia Obama would keep her baby, which is due in late December, and marry the child’s father.
“Our beautiful daughter Malia came to us with news that as parents we knew would make her grow up faster than we had ever planned. We’re proud of Malia’s decision to have her baby and even prouder to become grandparents,” the Obamas said in the brief statement.
“Malia and the young man she will marry are going to realise very quickly the difficulties of raising a child, which is why they will have the love and support of our entire family,” they added.
Malia, the elder daughter, born on July 4, 1998, has pursued her interests in film and television, taking on internships in the entertainment industry and studying at Harvard University. Her choice of a career in the arts signifies a departure from the political world her parents are synonymous with, showcasing her individuality and passion for storytelling.
Sasha, the younger daughter, born on June 10, 2001, has kept a relatively lower profile compared to the rest of her family. After completing her high school education at Sidwell Friends School, a prestigious institution known for educating children of Washington’s elite, she enrolled in the University of Michigan. Sasha’s college choice reflects her desire for a somewhat normal life away from the political spotlight.
